Benjamin's Talent Wins Top College Place

Report (abridged) by Charlotte Richardson

A former Churchill Community School pupil has been accepted to study at a prestigious academy of music and art.
Benjamin Shepherd is flying off to the Slovak Republic in August to settle in before starting at the
Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts in Bratislava.

Benjamin's mother, Christine, said: "Because of [Benjamin's] late start [in classical piano playing] a lot of institutions
were worried about him going straight into a degree. So when Trinity College, London, offered him a
foundation course we decided he is so dedicated and gifted that we should fully support him.
Now we are so excited for Benjamin as the college in Bratislava is highly renowned."

Benjamin, aged 21, was a keen gymnast until the age of 13 when he contracted glandular fever.

When he was 14 his parents took him to see the Australian pianist David Helfgott. After seeing his
icon play, he became desperate to start learning the piano and for the following 18 months all his
wages from working in Sidcot School's catering department, scrubbing pots and pans, was used to buy one.
After local lessons he was offered a place at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama,
where he won the Beattie prize for piano. Now he will complete his degree, which he started
at Trinity College of Music, in Bratislava.

Benjamin says that his family has contributed to his rapid progress.

He said: "I feel extremely lucky, privileged and thankful. It made me realise just how special my family are.
Giving up so much to support me in realising my dreams demonstrated real generosity and parental support."
